STAIR TREAD - Split

Greetings,

I have a stair tread the has split all the way across about half way front to back.

How can I repair this without having to remove as it is obviously rebated either side

Good call on not wanting to pull it out! Those rebates make that a pain!
I think the best approach you can do is stabilizing from above using epoxy.
You can tart by vacuuming and cleaning out the crack to ensure good adhesion, then carefully wick a thin, penetrating epoxy into the split. This will soak deep down, re-bonding the separated wood fibers, and strengthening the whole tread.
If the gap is wide, say over 1/8", let the penetrating epoxy cure, then follow up with a colored epoxy paste or wood filler over the surface to fill the void.
If you can rig up a way to press or clamp the tread lightly while it cures, that will help close the gap before you sand the repair flush!

You can fix that in place by opening the split slightly, injecting a good wood glue or epoxy, then clamping it tight across the tread until it’s fully cured. If you can get a few screws or dowels in from underneath for extra strength, even better and that way you avoid pulling the whole tread out
