Old hat stand needs some refreshment

I have a very sturdy and high-quality wooden hat stand from my grandfather. The problem is that it's very old and the color is almost gone, it has a lot of scratches so i want to completely restore it. First off, do i need to scrape or sand it, or both? Second, do i need a primer or i should go directly with paint? And last but not least, what type of color i should use, water based or oil based? A lot of questions i know but i want to make this hat stand perfect

You should definitely sand (twice, 1 120-grit and another 220-grit for the smooth finish). But you could scrape too if there's a stubborn old paint or something. Primer is a must otherwise it's gonna be of low quality I think. Paint type is totally up to you! Just end with a topcoat (clear one( ok).

Nice of you to take care of your grandpa's hat stand! for easy restoration, i suggest you look for a good water-based paint and compatible primer for a lovely finish! let us see the before and after photos when you're done

I always use Sherwin Williams for water based paint, the colors are great

First,sand it down to get rid of any scratches and old finish. If the wood looks good, you can skip the primer, but it can help the paint stick better. For the paint, water-based is simple to use and clean up, while oil-based is a bit harder to manage but gives a deeper look. Both options work,it just depends on the look you want
