Thicknesser/jointer

Hi,

I am very new to woodworking and about to attempt my first project. For that reason I’m not wanting to spend loads of money on equipment in case it turns out I’m not very good at it.

Does anyone know where I could rent a thicknesser and or jointer in the Leeds/West Yorkshire area?

I’ve managed to track down everything else I need but not the equipment I need to make my wood flat and square.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Tim, totally understand not wanting to spend big starting out. For a thicknesser or jointer , try checking with HSS Hire, Jewson or even local tool hire shops, they might have them or know who does. Also worth looking into community workshops or maker spaces around Leeds, they often have that kind of gear you can use. Good luck with the first project!!

Renting tools like jointers and thicknessers feels like throwing money away. If you're serious about woodworking, even as a beginner, you're better off buying used gear and actually building skills.

You could give HSS Tool Hire or Brandon Hire a shot in Leeds, they often stock planers and thicknessers. It's also worth checking out Facebook Marketplace to find local woodworkers who might be willing to rent theirs out. Another option to consider is that many timber yards provide machining services, where they'll plane your boards for you, this could end up being more affordable than renting equipment.
