General Tools MMD950 moisture meter issue

My General Tools MMD950 moisture meter's acting up. The pinless readings jump all over the place (30%-99%), while the pin readings are low but still weird. Even showing moisture when they're not touching anything.

Any tips on using the pinless sensor correctly? And how do I get a real sense of the wood's moisture inside when the pins only read the surface? What's causing all of this?

Those cheap combo meters are notorious for flaky pinless readings. If it's jumping around when not touching wood, it's basically noise. Trust the pins more... they're not perfect, but at least they give consistent numbers.

bro, that low reading when the pins aren't touching anything is a big red flag. A properly functioning moisture meter should read 0% (or an error message) when not in contact with anything.
That's a strong sign that the internal sensor is either damaged, needs to be recalibrated, or is simply faulty. I'd check the user manual for a recalibration procedure. If that doesn't work, it might be time to consider a warranty claim or a replacement, because that kind of phantom reading means you can't trust anything it's telling you.
