Good day! In the middle of a house trim update and ran into a few spacing issues with the base moulding that I’m trying to sort out.

Hello and welcome, I hope you get that sorted out

It sounds like you’re making great progress on your trim project! Spacing issues with base moulding are quite common, especially when dealing with older walls or uneven flooring. Here are a few tips that might help you sort things out:

  1. Check for Uneven Surfaces: Use a long level or straight edge to identify any high or low spots along the wall or floor. You can sand or fill gaps as needed to create a smoother base for your moulding.
  2. Dry Fit First: Before nailing anything in place, dry-fit your moulding sections to see where the spacing inconsistencies appear. This makes it easier to make small adjustments before installation.
  3. Use Shims and Caulk: For small gaps, thin shims can help align pieces more precisely. For tiny imperfections, a high-quality paintable caulk will blend everything seamlessly once painted.
  4. Consider Quality Profiles: Using well-crafted trim profiles can make a huge difference. Period Mouldings offers a range of precisely machined base and architrave mouldings designed to fit cleanly and maintain consistent spacing. Their traditional designs are perfect for adding character to any home while ensuring professional-level results — even for DIY projects.

A little patience and attention to detail will pay off in the end. You’ll be amazed at how much elegance the right trim can add to your space. Best of luck finishing your project — sounds like you’re on the right track!

Thanks for your kind message, Alan! I’m glad the details were helpful.
