How do I prepare wood for carving?

I want to start to learn wood carving, not joining any class, just watching a few beginner tutorials on youtube.
I have a few butternut & Pine woods. I heard they’re good for carvings

What I want to know is how to prepare them for carvings?
Is there something I should do to make the logs easier to carve?

Fresh cut logs need to season first, so seal the ends with wax or paint to prevent checking while they dry. Green wood carves easier but will crack as it dries. Butternut's perfect for beginners, pine can be pitchy and tear out

I normally use watered down PVA it does the trick but let them dry out naturally ie not in the sun they recommend an inch per year

Starting with sharp tools very important and maybe draw your design on the wood first
