Help me in cleaning my cedar beams?

I'm fixing up an old barn loft, and I'm trying to clean some cedar beams that have been sitting for over 30 years. They got hay dust and maybe some sticky stuff from moisture or animals. I brushed and vacuumed most of it, but not sure what to use next. I don't want to use soap since it might soak into the wood. Has anyone tried vinegar or something easy on the wood? Thanks!

You're right to loose debris off first. For the remaining dirt and residue, use a stiff brush and a mild solution. A mix of water and a small amount of household cleaner but vinegar can also work. Works well for me. Key is to avoid using too much liquid. Use a damp cloth rather than a soaking wet one and to work in small sections. You're trying to lift the dirt and not saturate the wood. You can also try a wood-specific cleaner which is formulated to be less harsh on the material. Always test a small, hidden area first to see how the wood reacts.
